New Student Information

Welcome first year students! We hope that the following information assists you in your transition to the Amherst area.

The University provides limited housing for graduate students who wish to live on campus. If this is your desire, please visit the Residential Life website as early as possible to ensure that your request can be processed.

Most graduate students in the PSE program live off campus. The University provides off-campus housing referrals.  Another great resource is the Five College Social, a website that has postings for local housing as well as advertisments for furnishings etc. The Daily Collegian also advertises for housing as well as helps you to get better acquainted with life on Campus.

To become more familiar with the campus, view the Campus Map. For bus route information visit Transit Services or Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA) where you can view the schedules/routes.

The Academic Calendar, Graduate Student Handbook, New Student Checklist and other informative topics are on the Graduate School's website.

A listing of the PSE course offerings with descriptions is located on the Course page of our website.

Please stop by the main office and introduce yourself when you arrive in Amherst. We look forward to meeting you.

If you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact Lisa Groth, our Graduate Program Manager, at (413) 577-9120 or lgroth@polysci.umass.edu.
