Persistence of Perfect Packing in Twisted Bundles of Elastic Filaments

A study by Greg Grason and collaborators Andreea Panaitescu and Arshad Kudrolli at Clarke University was featured on the cover of the June 15, 2018 issue of Physical Review Letters. Tomographic experiments probe the evolution of 3D structure of multi-filament packings with imposed twist, and reveal, the intra-filament elasticity plays a key role in negotiating the structural and mechanical consequences of geometric frustration in this prototypical materials architecture.
