Cell Manipulation via Remotely Switchable Polymer Layers
Abstract
A challenge in tissue engineering is remote control of cell migration, proliferation and fate at the single cell level. Two easily implemented “toolboxes” can switch on demand macromolecule-cell membrane association: (1) soluble azobenzene-containing polyamphiphiles that bind lipid bilayers and cells under blue light, triggering mild cytosolic penetration of peptides. (2) Comb-like poly(Lysine)-g-PEO derivatives that are adsorbed as cell-repellant or activatable (copper-free clickable end function) domains, triggering cell adhesion and migration on micropatterns.
