Assembly and dynamics of PEG functionalized silica-coated gold nanorods at surface of an ionic liquid can be directly studied using a scanning electron microscope. In-situ visualization of a transition from isotropic to a liquid crystalline can provide a better understanding of the relationship between the local structure and single-particle dynamics of anisotropic particles in a 2D assembly.
