Configuring your email client for POP access

To access PSE email via POP in Outlook 2003:

  1. Click Tools > E-mail Accounts.
  2. Select Add New E-mail Account and click Next.
  3. Select POP3 and click Next.
  4. Enter your name, your complete email address (username@mail.pse.umass.edu), username and password. Enter the mail.pse.umass.edu for POP3 and SMTP servers.
  5. Click More Settings, and select the Outgoing Server tab.
  6. Check the checkbox next to My Outgoing Server (SMTP) Requires Authentication. Make sure Log On Using is also checked. Enter your username and password in the appropriate fields.
  7. Click OK. Click Next. Click Finish.

To enable SSL encryption in Outlook 2003:

  • Click Tools > Email Accounts.
  • Place a dot in the circle next to View or change existing email accounts.
  • Select your email account and click Change.
  • Make sure that you have mail.pse.umass.edu as the incoming server and mail.pse.umass.eduas the outgoing server.
  • Click More Settings.
  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • For the outgoing mail server type 465. Check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  • For the incoming mail server type 995. Check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  • Click OK. Click Next. Click Finish.

To access PSE email via POP in Outlook 2007:

  1. Click Tools > E-mail Accounts.
  2. On the E-mail tab, click New.
  3. If you are asked to select an E-mail Service, select Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP and click Next. If you are not asked to select an E-mail Service, proceed to Step 4.
  4. Enter your name, (username@mail.pse.umass.edu) address, and password. Place a checkmark in the field to the left of Manually configure server settings or additional service types and click Next.
  5. Select Internet E-mail and click Next.
  6. Under Server Information, select POP3 for the account type. Enter mail.pse.umass.edu for the POP3 (incoming) server and mail.pse.umass.edu for the SMTP (outgoing) server. Enter your Username and Password in the appropriate fields.
  7. Click More Settings, and select the Outgoing Server tab.
  8. Check the checkbox next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. Make sure Log On Using is also selected. Enter your Username and Password in the appropriate fields.
  9. Click OK. Click Next. Click Finish.

To enable SSL encryption in Outlook 2007:

  • Click Tools > Account Settings.
  • Click Change.
  • Make sure that you have mail.pse.umass.edu for the incoming server and mail.pse.umass.edufor the outgoing server.
  • Click More Settings.
  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • For the outgoing mail server type 465. Check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  • For the incoming mail server type 995. Select SSL from the drop down menu next to Use the following type of encrypted connection.
  • Click OK. Click Next. Click Finish.

To access PSE email via POP in Outlook 2010:

  1. Click File > Info > Account Settings.
  2. From the Account Settings drop down menu, select Account Settings.
  3. Under the E-mail tab, click New.
  4. In the User Information section, enter your name and enter your mail.pse.umass.edu e-mail address.
  5. In the Server Information section, select POP3 as the Account Type, entermail.pse.umass.edu as the Incoming Mail Server (POP3) and enter mail.pse.umass.eduas the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP).
  6. In the Logon Information section, enter your Username and Password in the appropriate fields.
  7. Click More Settings.
  8. On the General tab, enter a name for the Mail Account (PSE is a good choice...)
  9. Click the Outgoing Server tab.
  10. Select My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and Use the same settings as my incoming mail server.
  11. Click OK. Click Next. Click Finish.

To enable SSL encryption in Outlook 2010:

  • Click File > Account Settings.
  • Click Change.
  • Make sure that you have mail.pse.umass.edu for the incoming server and mail.pse.umass.edufor the outgoing server.
  • Click More Settings.
  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • For the outgoing mail server type 465. Check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  • For the incoming mail server type 995. Select SSL from the drop down menu next to Use the following type of encrypted connection.
  • Click OK. Click Next. Click Finish.

To access PSE email via POP in Mac Mail:

  1. Click Mail > Preferences.
  2. Click Accounts at the top of the window, and then click on the plus sign (+) located in the bottom left corner of the window to create a new account.
  3. Enter your full name, your complete e-mail address, and password. Click Continue.
  4. Select POP for the Account Type and enter PSE for the Description. Enter mail.pse.umass.eduas the Incoming (POP3) Mail Server. Enter your Username and Password. Click Continue.
  5. Enter PSE for the Description. Enter mail.pse.umass.edu as the Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server name.
  6. Check the checkbox to the left of Use Authentication. Enter your Username and Password. Click Continue
  7. Click Create.
  8. Close the Accounts window. If asked to save your changes, do so. Your mail.pse folders should appear on the left side of the window.

To enable SSL encryption in Mac Mail:

    Mac Mail automatically checks for SSL and will use it if available. To use SSL with an existing account:

  • Click the Mail > Preferences, then click the Account tab.
  • Click the drop down menu next to your Outgoing Mail Server.
  • Choose Edit SMTP Server List.
  • Click Advanced.
  • Place a check in the box next to Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). Click Ok.
  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • Check the box next to Use SSL.
  • Close the window. If asked to save your changes, do so.

To access PSE email via POP in Mozilla Thunderbird:

  1. Click Tools > Account Settings.
  2. Click the Account Actions drop down menu and select Add Mail Account.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Enter your full name, your complete email address, and your password in the appropriate fields.
  5. Click Continue.
  6. Wait for Mozilla Thunderbird to find the e-mail settings.
  7. Make sure that Thunderbird detects and uses SSL. If it does not, insructions are provided below.
  8. Click Create Account to complete setup.

To enable SSL encryption in Mozilla Thunderbird:

  • Click Tools > Account Settings.
  • Select Server Settings.
  • Choose SSL from the drop down menu next to Connection Security.
  • Make sure the Port number reads 995.
  • Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) from the menu on the left.
  • Click Edit
  • Choose SSL from the drop down menu next to Connection Security.
  • Make sure the port number reads 465.
  • Click Ok, then Ok again.

To access PSE email via POP in Outlook Express:

  1. Click Tools > Accounts.
  2. Click the Mail tab at the top.
  3. Remove any other accounts that you see here that you don't use. Click Add > Mail.
  4. Enter your full name, your email address, and click Next
  5. At the top, you should see the following:
    • My incoming mail server is a POP3 server
    • Incoming mail (POP3): mail.pse.umass.edu
    • Outgoing mail (SMTP): mail.pse.umass.edu
  6. For your Internet Mail Logon, please enter your Username and Password. A check the box next "Remember password"; no other box should be checked. Click Next.
  7. Click Finish.
  8. Back in the Mail tab portion of the Internet Accounts window highlight your PSE account and click Properties.
  9. Click the Servers tab.
  10. In the Outgoing Mail Server section of the page, place a checkmark in the box to the left of My Server Requires Authentication.
  11. Click the "Settings" button to the right of the "My server requires authentication" statement.
  12. Under "Logon Information", make sure "Log on using" is selected. Enter your Username and Password.
  13. Click OK. Click Apply. Click OK. Close.

To enable SSL encryption in Outlook Express:

  • Click Tools > Accounts
  • Click the Mail tab, then click Properties.
  • Click the Servers tab.
  • Make sure that you have mail.pse.umass.edu for the incoming server and mail.pse.umass.edufor the outgoing server.
  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • For the outgoing mail server type 465. Check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  • For the incoming mail server type 995. Check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  • Click Ok.

To access PSE email via POP in Windows Live Mail:

  1. Select Add e-mail account.
  2. Enter your your email address, password, and full name. Click Next
  3. At the top, you should see the following:
    • My incoming mail server is a POP3 server
    • Fill in Incoming mail (POP3):with mail.pse.umass.edu
    • Fill in Outgoing mail (SMTP): with mail.pse.umass.edu
    • Enter your username
    • Check the My server requires authentication box
  4. Click Next.
  5. Click Finish.

To enable SSL encryption in Windows Live Mail:

  • In Windows Live Mail right-click your email account.
  • Click Properties.
  • Select the Servers tab.
  • Make sure that you have mail.pse.umass.edu for the incoming server and mail.pse.umass.edufor the outgoing server.
  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • For the outgoing mail server type 465. Check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  • For the incoming mail server type 995. Check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  • Make sure the password option is set to "Log on using clear text authentication".

To access PSE email via POP in Microsoft Windows Mail:

  1. Click Tools > Accounts.
  2. Remove any other accounts that you see here that you don't use. Click Add > Mail. Click Next
  3. Enter your full name. Click Next
    • My incoming mail server is a POP3 server
    • Fill in Incoming mail (POP3):with mail.pse.umass.edu
    • Fill in Outgoing mail (SMTP): with mail.pse.umass.edu
    • Enter your username
    • Check the My server requires authentication box
  4. Click Next.
  5. For your Internet Mail Logon, please enter your Username and Password. A check the box next "Remember password"; no other box should be checked. Click Next.
  6. Click Finish. Close.

To enable SSL encryption in Microsoft Windows Mail:

  • Click Tools . Accounts.
  • Highlight your account, then click Properties.
  • Click the Servers tab.
  • Make sure that you have mail.pse.umass.edu for the incoming server and mail.pse.umass.edufor the outgoing server.
  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • For the outgoing mail server type 465. Check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  • For the incoming mail server type 995. Check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
  • Click Ok, then Close.
