This year The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, was able to support seven teachers in its Research Experiences for Teachers Program.

Ms. Leslie McGourty, from Merrimack High School, Merrimack New Hampshire, a physics teacher, teamed with Mr. Nathan Dill, a physics teacher at The Northfield Mount Hermon School, Northfield, Massachusetts. Physicist Dr. Narayanan Menon directed their research on “The Effects of Crumpling”.

Ms. Kristen Chiapperini, a chemistry teacher at Brockton High School in Brockton Massachusetts, Ms. Reina Horowitz, a chemistry teacher at Springfield Central High School in Springfield, Massachusetts and Mr. Michael Thompson, a chemistry teacher at the Amherst/Pelham Regional High School in Amherst, Massachusetts studied “Nanoparticles at Polymer Interfaces” under the direction of Dr. Thomas Russell.

Mr. Jon Tyler, a chemistry teacher at Westfield High School in Westfield, Massachusetts studied “Residual Stress Development in Epoxy Based Glassy Materials.”

Ms. LaVerne Hamlin, a biology/physics teacher at Armstrong High School in Richmond, Virginia, studied “Tensile Behavior of Bisphenol A- Based Polycarbonates and Co-polycarbonates.” Both worked under the direction of Dr. Alan Lesser.
